Knowledge of Good in Platos The Republic Essay - 984 Words

An Intellectual Knowledge of Good in Plato’s Republic Socrates might be a wise philosopher but one of his ideas strikes me as particularly naive. In the allegory of the cave, he tells Glaucon that in the world of knowledge the idea of good appears last of all, and is seen only with an effort [ ·] and that this is the power upon which he [the intellectual] would act rationally (517b-c). In other words, he seems to be implying that knowledge of goodness is a sufficient condition for being good. A person who has seen what goodness is will henceforth act in a way that is good. Is this belief justified? For instance, we sometimes do things that we know are not good but we do them nonetheless and feel guilty after that. If, as such cases†¦show more content†¦In the sentence preceding the quote, he referred to the journey of the prisoner out of the cave as the ascent of the soul into the intellectual world (517b; emphasis mine). What he means is clearly an intellectual understanding of the idea of good and not a mysterious understan ding of any other sort. Why would Socrates think that an intellectual knowledge of good is a sufficient condition for being good? Well, Socrates also seems believes that goodness is innate in human beings and that people who have seen what goodness is will want to be good. According to him the power and capacity of learning exists in the soul already and there is some art which will effect conversion in the easiest and quickest manner; not implanting the faculty of sight, for that exists already, but has been turned in the wrong direction (518c-d). So the prisoner is not blind although he lives in the darkness of the cave. In order for him to be able to see the sun, all that needs to be done is for him to be rescued from the underground den. Similarly, the capacity for goodness is innate in human beings and there is no need to implant this quality into their souls. The art which will effect conversion is the philosophical art of helping them attain the idea of good (518d). Upon attaining this idea of good, they will be like the freed prisoner who would felicitate himselfShow MoreRelatedPlatos View in Human Knowledge Essay examples1392 Words   |  6 PagesPlatos View in Human Knowledge Plato presents three different views about knowledge in Meno, Republic, and Theaetetus. My Experience At The Military Community - 1114 Words

A normal community is a group of people that live in the same place, but my community is different as its spread out all over the world. I chose to look at the needs of the military community, as it is the only true community I have been apart during my adult life. The military community is a special group of service members and their families who have different lifestyles than most and share a unique, family like bond. For my report I chose to interview two military spouses, currently stationed in two different states, to get a better feel for what our spread out community needs. During their interviews they each gave me different, yet important answers. The first person I interviewed was Jennifer Springer, her husband has been in the†¦show more content†¦Having one curriculum for all schools on military installations would make keep education consistent and set military children up for success. Being a mother myself, I knew why this need was important, but I wanted to know why this was important to Jennifer too. When I ask her why our community needed this, she gave me a wonderful answer. She said â€Å"It’s hard moving my son to a new place every time my husband gets a new job. He needs something consistent in life, and what he’s learning should be the one thing that stays the same no matter where we are.† Military children move three times as much as civilian children, which can have a negative effect of their education. If the schools on military installations were all run with the same curriculum, the children would be learning the same thing not matter where they were. One curriculum would keep education consistent and make transitioning to new schools easier for military children. Before I ended our interview I asked her the final question, what does she think should be done about it. She said â€Å"The answer is simple, we need to change all the schools on military installations over to D.O.D.E.A. run schools. This would give the children one curriculum and the local schools districts wouldn’t have to fund the schools on post.† This idea is great, as the buildings already there and it would put more money back into the local school districts budget. Create the text for the logo Essay Example For Students

Create the text for the logo Essay General Overview I had to create a logo that would promote the video shop and encourage people to gain membership. I did it in Serif page plus eight and used clipart from the web and used a text wizard from Serif page plus eight to create the text for the logo. This task was predominantly easy; all it involved was creating a logo from text and clipart. It went well because it was particularly easy to do, and it did not contain any hard work or complicated things to do. Obtaining the graphics was harder than I thought it would be. I had to go into MSWord and get the clipart graphics from the Internet. I had to make no modifications to the plan, because the task is so simple. Criteria for Success * Enable customers to set apart the video shop by means of this logo. It enables customers to set apart this video shop by the logo, because it is a unique logo, to which no other video shop has access. This enables the customer to recognise Mercury Entertainment by the logo, and also informs and makes the customer know about us sub-consciously, so that they will know us and trust us when they come to rent from Mercury Entertainment. Be easy to replicate, so that I can put it on the material quickly. It is easy to replicate, because it is in a separate file as a picture on its own, so any program that I use can easily import the picture, rather than having to open Serif page plus eight. Look professional, so that the business gets a good reputation. It looks professional because it is simple and not too colourful or bright. This attracts customers even more than if it was more colourful and kid-like. Conclusion I feel that I have successfully completed what I have set out to do. It is as good as the best logos in business, as it still does the job. I think that it is average produce, and that it will still be identifiable against other logos. I feel what I have done is not of full commercial standard, however, that is not easy to achieve. I also think that it will still look good when on other backgrounds, i. e. a data capture form and a letter. Evaluation I feel that if I had more time I would have been able to produce a more effective and professional logo. Evaluation of Promotion Logo.
